Zucker shows support for a new anti-piracy bill

NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker attended a news conference yesterday where New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to crackdown on film piracy. The proposed Piracy Protection Act would punish first-time offenders with up to a year in jail and a fine of as much as $1,000, reports the L.A. Times.

Under the proposed measure, repeat offenders would be charged with a felony. Current offenders are charged with a violation fee of $250, reports C21 Media. Cuomo regularly refers to entertainment piracy, which he says costs 140,000 jobs annually, as "modern-day organized crime."

Zucker told WNYC Radio: "There's a lot of talk these days about the state of the economy, the one sector of the economy that's not facing a slowdown, I think, is this one, and for pirates business is in fact booming."
