It’s well known that a book deal can coax even the crankiest of introverts from their shell. But in this case, it seems to have unleashed a simmering monster. USA Today reported last week that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, notorious for avoiding all contact with the media, has suddenly become ubiquitous as he drums up publicity for Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges, a new book he co-authored with Bryan Garner.
The newly minted media darling is reportedly using his new bully pulpit to justify years of strict constructionist rulings. Reuters announced today that during an interview appearing on a forthcoming installment of “60 Minutes,” Scalia takes on critics of the 2000 decision that finally ended Al Gore’s presidential bid. To those who think he unfairly promoted George W. Bush to the White House in order to advance a conservative agenda, Scalia remarked that the ruling was, “so old by now,” and suggested they “get over it.” And the Baltimore Sun reported today that during an hour-long speech at Baltimore’s Lyric Opera House on April 24, Scalia said he rejected the notion of a “living Constitution,” or one that changes as society changes. Fortunately, for pro-choice advocates, Scalia added that since abortion isn’t mentioned in the Constitution, decisions concerning its legality should be left to legislators, not judges – no matter how media friendly the may be.
