David Rockefeller, Sr., the former chairman of Chase Manhattan bank and grandson of robber baron John D. Rockefeller, has bequeathed $100 million to Harvard, The New York Times reports. It’s the largest gift ever pledged to the university by an alumnus, although non-alumni Eli and Edythe Broad gave the same amount in 2005. The 92 year-old Rockefeller told the Times that the love of art and distaste for Fascism he acquired during a summer abroad trip to Germany in 1936 played an important role in shaping his life. Consequently, 70 percent of the donation will fund study abroad programs, while the remaining 30 percent will go to support arts education. Rockefeller has been an active alumnus, formerly serving on the university’s Board of Overseers. This is terrific news for the demure historian Drew Faust, who some have doubted could match the vaunted fundraising prowess of former president Lawrence Summers.
