Newsweek and the NY Post both report today on rumors that Michael Bloomberg’s advisors are urging him to purchase the New York Times.
Portfolio blogger Felix Salmon argues that Bloomberg will not buy the New York Times. Why? "[T]he companies simply aren't much of a fit. Bloomberg makes money from subscriptions; the NYT makes money from selling advertising. Bloomberg's occasional toe-dips into consumer-facing media have never taken off, and even the highly-respected and enormous Bloomberg News operation is financially largely irrelevant to the fortunes of its parent."
The Observer’s Politker blog reports that Bloomberg said he was “flattered” by the speculation, but also said “I am not a newspaper person.” Blogger Azi Paybarah notes that this is exactly “how he responded to, but didn’t discourage, more than a year’s worth of rumors that he would run for president.”
