Arthur Pier, 93

Professions: Doctor known for his personal attention to patients and often making up to 14 house calls in one day; taught at Harvard Medical School; served in the 105th General Hospital Unit during World War II, gaining expertise in tropical diseases.

Degrees: A.B. from Harvard, 1935; M.D. from Harvard Medical School, 1939.

Quote: "He was what you think a doctor should be. He made house calls. He had his home phone number listed in the phone book. He carried a little black bag. He walked all over Boston. He just wore a sports coat--never wore an overcoat, never wore a hat." —Helen MacLeod, Dr. Pier's secretary and sole employee for 12 years.

Death: July 30, 2006, at his home in Brookline, Mass., of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
