Professions: Founded Online Computer Library Center, or OCLC, a vast computerized database comprising the catalogs of some 10,000 libraries around the world and available to all library patrons, in 1967; librarian and administrator at Yale University; worked for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II.

Degrees: A.B. from Harvard, 1935.

Death: July 31, 2006, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from a cerebral hemorrhage.
