David McAllester, 89

Profession: An ethnomusicologist who devoted himself to the study of Native American music, and a pacifist with strong objections to WWII, the Vietnam War, and the current war in Iraq.

Degrees: Majored in anthropology at Harvard, class of 1938; attended Julliard; earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Columbia University.

Quote: “He wasn't flaky or a dropout or anything. He was completely accepted in the mainstream of American academic culture. His work was so rigorous. His language abilities and his attention to detail and the quality of his own writing and the clarity of his thought -- all of those set a very high standard.” -McAllester's associate, David Locke

Death: April 30, 2006, because of a stroke three days earlier.
