Stanley van den Heuvel postponed Harvard Law to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. Returning to snowy New England, he practiced law for several years before joining the Hanover Bank; by the time he retired, 27 years later, he was the senior vice president and corporate secretary. The Stamford Advocate notes he was the director of several business and charitable organizations, including the Newcomen Society of the U.S., a local Red Cross chapter, and the regional Goodwill Industries. He passed away May 13, 2006.
