David R. Arnold, 89; Businessman

Not every Harvard graduate can claim descent from a family that founded another college. But David R. Arnold's ancestors, social reformers and abolitionists, created Knox College in 1837 to provide an education for all, including women and blacks.

Greenwich Time tells us that Arnold attended Knox as well, followed by Harvard Business School. By the time he retired, he had worked his way up from accountant to senior Vice president of the Continental Can Corporation. But he didn't forget Knox, and remained a dedicated trustee of the college.

He passed away on May 4, 2006, in Darien, Connecticut.
