Susie Cushner The Tocatta watch from Raymond Weil, stainless steel with a quartz movement.

Soon after Massachusetts legalized same-sex marriage, in 2003, Harvard graduate students Marc Diaz and Travis Wright began to entertain the thought of nuptials. They discussed established traditions and ways to mark their engagement. “Diamond rings wouldn’t work for us,” says Diaz. “When it comes to men’s jewelry, we’re both of the ‘less is more’ school.” Instead, they decided on dress watches. Watches are “handsome and functional,” says Diaz. “We also really appreciated the passing of time that a watch symbolizes.”

After weeks of searching, the couple chose Raymond Weil’s Toccata, the very first model they had seen. The Toccata was a perfect choice for both of them. Diaz loved “the small, fine pattern of the band’s links,” while Wright was drawn to the “classic design and textured detail” on the face.

They were married on June 10, 2006, two days after commencement.
