Where to Volunteer

International Rescue Committee: Dr. George Rupp, President. Operates humanitarian aid programs in more than 25 countries and relies on a network of volunteers to help refugees from war-torn regions resettle. www.theirc.org 212-551-3000

Medical Teams International: Bill Essig, Vice President of International Programs. Volunteers in impoverished places overseas and stateside provide medical and dental care, rebuild homes and water-sanitation systems, and help sort and ship medical supplies. www.medicalteams.org 800-959-4325

City Year: Michael Brown and Alan Khazei, Founders. The youth service corps programs engage young adults in a year of full-time community service, mentoring and tutoring children, running day camps, and rejuvenating public spaces in hardscrabble neighborhoods. AmeriCares: Elizabeth Furst Frank, Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning. Delivers medicine, health care, and relief supplies in 137 countries and operates three domestic programs: a summer camp for seven to 15-year-olds whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS; free home repairs for those in need; and free health care for uninsured residents of Connecticut. www.americares.org 800-486-4357

KIPP Foundation and Schools: Richard Barth, CEO; Steve Mancini, Director of Public Affairs; and David Wick, Chief Development Officer. KIPP gives disadvantaged kids a boost up the education ladder with college-prep instruction, extracurricular activities, and character development programs. Earthwatch Institute: Herschel Post, European Chairman; Philip L. Weickhardt, Australian Chairman. Volunteers from around the world work with field researchers in archeology, marine science, rainforest ecology, and wildlife conservation in close to 80 countries. Partners In Health: Paul Farmer and Jim Yong Kim, Co-Founders. Provides care to destitute people around the world suffering with AIDS, tuberculosis, and other diseases; trains local healthcare workers; and promotes free health care and education for the poor. www.pih.org 617-432-5298

America’s Second Harvest: Peter Dunn, Chairman. Helps to fill the empty stomachs of the nation’s poor by distributing more than two billion pounds of donated food to 200 food banks and 94,000 soup kitchens annually, feeding 25 million people. www.secondharvest.org 312-641-6619

Harlem Children’s Zone: Geoffrey Canada, President and CEO. Breaks cycles of generational poverty by keeping kids on a college track. Runs preschools, K-12 charter schools, SAT prep courses, and college campus trips for high-school students. Direct Relief International: Stanley C. Hatch, Chairman. Provides pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to healthcare groups and clinics in 56 countries, including the U.S, and coordinates emergency response with local agencies. It has dispensed $47 million of medical aid to the Gulf Coast since the 2005 hurricanes, and responded to the 8.0 magnitude earthquake in Peru this year with nearly 30 tons of medical materials. www.directrelief.org 805-964-4767
