Offensive Fouls

College football season is over—presumably none too soon for Harvard coach Tim Murphy.

Call it Murphy’s Law. College football season is over, and none too soon for Harvard coach Tim Murphy, who recently presided over a remarkable run of lawlessness. It began in April, when Dan Lane and James R. Velissaris got into a fight with a shuttle-bus driver and were suspended for the season opener. In June, the team summarily dismissed captain Matthew Thomas after he was arrested and charged with breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s dorm room and later assaulting her in a drunken rage when she tried to wake him. Then came the five-game suspension of starting QB Liam O’Hagan, announced in August, for an undisclosed contravention of team rules. The delicious icing on this appalling cake of insubordination came at team Skit Night in September, when wide receiver Keegan Toci staged a performance so mind-bendingly abhorrent that he was dismissed from the team; in contrast, a skit suggesting that star tailback Clifton Dawson vigorously fellates Murphy went unpunished.

Students can’t explain this spate of rambunctiousness. Some suggest that Murphy has lost control of the team; others say it’s coincidence. Toci’s skit listed 20 reasons Harvard’s program would never be Division I-A—but if one is “lacks sufficiently high-profile embarrassments,” he can pare that baby down to 19.
