He’s left his mark on many of the most important legislative initiatives of the past half century, often reaching across the aisle to advance his agenda through unlikely alliances with prominent Republicans. His shortcomings are legendary—scandal shadowed him until he was well past the age of youthful indiscretion—but he has by all accounts settled down since his second marriage, in 1992. Today, as the patriarch of both his star-crossed family and his squabbling party, Kennedy shows no signs of slowing down or backing off.
