Now appearing at the movies, in bookstores, on television, and just about everywhere but the voting booth. “I have no plans to be a candidate for president again,” he told George Stephanopoulos in June. Then why doesn’t anyone believe him? Maybe because of stunts like his May appearance on Saturday Night Live, during which he spoke from the “Oval Office” to update the nation on the progress of his “administration.” It was part of the publicity blitz for the film (and book) An Inconvenient Truth, which allowed Gore to direct unprecedented attention to the “climate crisis.” Despite being essentially a science-class slide show, it brought in more than $23 million at the box office. “This is not a boring film,” Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert wrote, going on to call it “fascinating and relentless.” Not words most associate with the Al Gore who lost the 2000 general election by a single vote (in the Supreme Court, that is).
