The nation’s first MBA president is a fifth-generation Yalie, but his epoch-making style of governance suggests that Bush learned everything he needed to know at Harvard Business School. From airtight message discipline to an unprecedented degree of delegation, America’s CEO has remade the Republican Party in his image—and may have changed politics permanently. The presidency is now more than ever about macromanaging: declaring a vision, appointing those who share it to carry out its minutiae, and above all, staying the course. Pundits may cite the war in Iraq, the budget deficit, the tax cuts, or a host of other issues, but if Bush has his way, his impact on the power and structure of the executive office will be his enduring legacy.

However… Three hundred million shareholders give him a frankly embarrassing approval rating, and their referendum on his performance this fall looks to be damning.
